Spurring local economic development and job creation
- Drove economic development in downtown Winchester with new restaurant liquor licenses
- Averted fiscal crisis that threatened the closure of Stone Zoo
- Achieved major project milestone (25% Design) for Tri-Community Bikeway
Fighting for adequate and equitable education funding
- Filed legislation to reform Chapter 70
- Led successful effort to launch Chapter 70 adequacy and equity study
- Advocated successfully for state funding for school building projects, including Stoneham Middle School, Vinson-Owen Elementary School, and Winchester High School
Improving local public transportation and flood mitigation
- Improved Route 132 bus service
- Secured $2 million in federal stimulus funding for accessibility improvements at Wedgemere Commuter Rail Station
- Secured $1 million for design and planning for new Winchester Center Commuter Rail Station
- Achieved major milestone (MEPA approval) for Winchester flood mitigation program
Reforming state government to make it more efficient, transparent, and accountable
- Ended abuse of state pension system
- Tightened ethics and lobbying rules
- Restructured transportation system to abolish the Turnpike Authority and save taxpayers $250 million
- Championed budget and spending transparency with new state spending website
Ensuring sound fiscal management through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression
- Passed balanced, responsible, on-time budgets
- Secured top notch bond rating for Massachusetts from all major rating agencies
